Smart goal 1 - Improve theoretical Knowledge of Events and Artists.
Reflection written by using Gibbs' Reflective Cycle
For my first goal I decided on the goal improve my knowledge on events and artists. To achieve this I watched six documentaris: Trainwreck: Woodstock '99, U2 360° Tour, FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, Avicii: I'm Tim, Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert, and Astroworld: Countdown to Tragedy. These showed me insights into event planning, artist management, the audience experience and risk management.
I was really excited for this because I really enjoy watching documentaires so being able to do something I enjoy and learn from it is a win- win situation. As I watched these documentaries it kept getting easier to spot the things that are wrong or done completely well which is interesting. I realised more and more how much responsibility there is in events. Not just making the event be a perfect experience, when I watched Avicii: I'm Tim this also made me realise how artists can be pushed too much and it can be forgotten that they are also just human beings that need rest as well.
Trainwreck and Astroworld provided good insights on logistics and crowd safety. With for example using the theoretical concept of intended vs lived experience it became clear how worng these events went. It showed how important it is to be prepared for everything and that key elements can't be missed out on. The U2 and coachella documentaries dove a little deeper into visitors experiences and related to experience design and Goossens and Mazursky's pre- direct and post exposure model. The circular stage and coachellas immersive art added to the visitor experience.
The theoretical knowledge became more easy to understand and realistic by seeing real world examples. Risk management become clear in Astroworld and trainwreck, revealing that lack of protocols and not enough (trained) staff can lead to life threatening situations. U2 and coachella can be seen as best practices showing how to evolve and adpt to your attendees and how to be succesful.
I really enjoyed learning by watching documentaries, I deepened my theoretical understanding of the event industry. I am now able to easily understand risks and opportunities by applying theoretical frameworks.
Going forward I will use risks assesments such as bottlenecks and try to see events from the customer point of view. Perhaps if I will indulge in more artists related jobs I will but their wellbeing first. I will keep watching documentaries to expand my knowledge.
